Most probable date of birth of Afonso Henriques, son of Henry of Burgundy and of Dona Teresa, natural daughter of Leonese King Alfonso VI.

Afonso Henriques
knights himself in Zamora ignoring the power of the Cardinal who was to knight him.
At age 13, this is the beginning of a very independent and fearless character.

Afonso Henriques
fights against his mother and her ally and lover, the Galician Count Fernão Peres de Trava at a field named São Mamede, near the castle of Guimarães. The Galician troops are defeated.

1129
On April 6, Afonso Henriques dictates a letter where he proclaims himself suzerain of all Portuguese cities.

1135
Alfonso VII, son of Dona Urraca is crowned Emperor of all of Spain at the Cathedral of Leon.
Afonso Henriques refuses to pay homage or tribute to his cousin.

1137
Peace Treaty of Tui.
After fighting against Alfonso VI in the North of Minho, Afonso Henriques promises the Emperor fidelity, security, and help against enemies. This Treaty strategically allows him time to face the Moors.

1139
Battle of Ourique. D. Afonso Henriques does battle to five moor kings and defeats them.

D. Afonso Henriques
begins to use the title of King.

Zamora Treaty probable date, in which Afonso Henriques establishes peace with his cousin Alfonso VII.
Meantime D. Afonso Henriques writes to Pope Innocence II and declares himself and all his descendants "censual" of the Church of Rome.
The word "censual" meant that he recognized the power of the Church and he was bound to pay obedience only to the pope. In other words, in his region no other power is recognized other than his own.

Afonso Henriques with the aid of foreign crusaders conquers Lisbon

Afonso Henriques
is imprisoned by Fernando II, king of Leon.

1179
The Catholic Church finally recognizes formally, Afonso Henriques as King and founder of the first Dynasty, that of Borgonha or Burgundy.

1180
End of conflicts with Fernando II of Leon for the possession of lands in the coast of Andaluzia.

1185
Afonso Henriques dies on December 6, in the same city he was born.
His legacy, apart from a great fortune, is the Condado Portucalense, now a country by the name of Portugal.
 

Notes: In the present short biography all names were depicted in today's local way of writing. Alfonso is the Spanish version for Afonso which is Portuguese. Some readers may consider that Portugal is a Province of Spain.
Henriques is Portuguese while Henriquez  is Spanish. The S is Portuguese while the Z is Spanish, now correctly said as Castilian.
