My visit to
Longquan
allowed me to see with my own eyes how things are done with Zhou
Zheng Wu's authorial swords, and the others that he has
for sale. |

The tassels are in yellow silk chord and the ring is of real jadeite (nephrite). The quality of the bronze fittings is extremely crisp. |

A wider view of the mountings in perfectly carved redwood . The main elements in the guard are two dragons and clouds surrounding a Buddhist pearl and the same element is repeated in the scabbard's mouth. |

The scabbard's end shows a very finely carved dragon rising from the water and being crowned by the Buddhist pearl while all the other elements along the scabbard are floral motifs with a pearl in the center. |

The smith's signature is finely carved unto the blade in the shape of a Chinese seal. Chinese jiagang (sanmai), as Zhou Zheng Wu explained to me, is subtle like the misty scenery of the mountains with clouds. It is not part of the Chinese tradition to polish a sword to show contrast. Everything is subtle...and this picture shows a lot of the activity in the blade very clearly and one can see the edge of the top layer in the lower edge. |

This picture above allows to view the scabbard mouth and the way it is mounted. Zhou Zheng Wu's seal style signature is well visible on the blade. |

I cleaned the blade
and used uchiko powder to bring a bit more of contrast which is more
visible with flash and in a totally dark environment. This was not the
case, but the sanmai (jiagang) is very visible. While cleaning the
blade with Kleenex, it cut through the three layers of Kleenex and cut
my finger. It is extremely sharp. The white dots visible are remains
of uchiko powder that reflect the flash light. |

Another view where it is entirely distinguishable the sanmai layer and the core steel. Some reflections. |

The blade had some
barely visible scuffs already when it came to me. I treated it with the utmost care
but these are very small scuffs that are almost invisible to the naked
eye. Sword comes with a nice box. |
